Letter: Caregivers, together

It’s been a long time coming, but the new caregiver support group for Rappahannock County finally got off to a heartening start last week at The Link. Ten of us came together to sit and share our stories about caring for loved ones suffering from dementia and other crippling conditions.

For many of us, it was a great relief to break through the isolation and discouragement that so often go with the caregiving role; looking around the room as people nodded and smiled and, yes, choked up a bit, we felt understood and comforted. And down the hall, three wonderful volunteers were providing respite care for the spouses some in our group had brought with them: they were singing and playing cards and having a very good time!

Thank you to The Link, the Alzheimer’s Association, and all the volunteers from the Rappahannock Eldercare Coalition who have made this new group possible! Our next meeting is Thursday, June 17, from 10:00 to 11:30. We plan to meet twice a month and we encourage everyone in Rappahannock who is caring for a family member or friend to come join us.
