The Washington Balalaika Society Orchestra returns to the Theatre at Washington to perform on Saturday, Oct. 9. The concert begins at 8.
The orchestra will play Russian and Eastern European folk and classical music characterized by beautiful melodies, rich harmonies and lively rhythms. The orchestra resembles a symphony orchestra in its breadth, but has no bowed instruments. Balalaikas and domras of various sizes are picked, plucked and strummed. Adding winds, percussion and guslis (a large table harp), accordions and the large contrabasses creates “an unexpected wall of sound.”
The Balalaika Society Orchestra began with eight musicians in 1988 and now has more than 60. At least half of their number will play in the Little Washington concert. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 ages 17 and younger. Call 540-675-1253 or e-mail TheatreVA@aol.com.
