It’s apple butter season!

In the photo at left above, the Amissville United Methodist Men made more than 50 gallons of apple butter the traditional way, with Bobby Smith, left, and Lou Alleman here tending copper kettles over an open fire. Members of the men’s group took turns stirring for 15 hours to achieve the delicious result, which was canned in pint jars, the sale of which will support the men’s service work in the community. To buy some, or for information about the men’s group, contact president Bill Boelte at 540-987-8819.

In the photo at right, “June Bug” (in the red hat) is more than adequately supervised as he stirs a batch of apple butter at the Beech Spring Gift Shop on U.S. 211 in Sperryville on Saturday. Supervising, left to right, are Maynard Housden, James Frye, Ella Jenkins, Russell Jenkins, Chad Knight, and Esteban Villanueva. Allison Rae Jenkins in front keeps her eye on June Bug.
