Sperryville column for Dec. 16

RAAC to Boc: Drop by anytime

Sperryville’s own Ray Boc, photographer extraordinaire, got a surprise Friday evening at the RAAC Community Theatre. Thinking he was going onstage to take a photo, Ray was honored for his dedication and involvement in all aspects of RAAC productions over the past 10-plus years. Ray has shown up with his camera at both rehearsals and productions, taking photos, making DVDs for the cast and crew and designing collages. What a joy to have Ray as part of our community. He always goes above and beyond.

Shop until we drop

By shopping locally, you’ll find a great variety of things to buy right here in Sperryville. Continuing our ideas for holiday gifts, visit the Rainbow Market, 11576 Lee Highway, and put together a variety of goodies for someone, whether it be organic soaps, lotions and herbal oils, or a basket of organic ingredients for your favorite cook. And how about a bar of organic chocolate for that special someone’s stocking?

A Country Cabin by the artist Straterra is among the works to be found at Glassworks Gallery.

Have you visited the Glassworks Gallery, 11774 Lee Highway, lately? Open 10:30 to 6 every day except Wednesday, the gallery features Eric Kvarnes’ amazing glass bowls plus work by his students and 13 local artists. Buy a special, one of a kind piece of jewelry or pottery, ironwork, lovely wooden bowls and ornaments. There are also paperweights by a young glass blower we’ll learn more about at a later date. There are too many possibilities to mention in one paragraph so go on a personal tour of Glassworks Gallery, which has been in business for 25 years.

This weekend (Dec. 18-19) promises to be an exciting one at Rappahannock Central’s River District Arts. The Studio at Firnew Farm is hosting a show to raise funds for the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Blue Ridge Conservancy. Visit this Saturday and Sunday at 3 River Lane (the corner of River Lane and Water Street) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a special reception Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. to find that perfect work of art for someone on your gift list.
