Shafran is Wakefield Athlete of the Month

Wakefield 1000-point scorer Brian Shafran with basketball coach Rob Griffin and Kathleen Grove, Wakefield's head of school.

The January 2011 Male Athlete of the Month at Wakefield Country Day School is junior Brian Shafran of Viewtown, a competitor in varsity boys basketball.

Shafran was a major factor in his team’s 6-1 January record. As the primary guard, his task is bringing the basketball up against pressure defenses. He hit a career milestone Jan. 24 when he scored his 1,000th varsity point in a 43-28 victory over Riverfront Christian. He is the leading scorer on the team and averaged 14.2 points per game in the month of January. He is a steady contributor in all phases of the game and in the school.

“We just honored Brian for his scoring,” said coach Rob Griffin, “and make no mistake that’s vital to team success; we have to put the ball in the basket more times than they do to win a game. But Brian’s contributions go beyond scoring. He handles most of the team’s ball-handling, and his speed and agility often allow him to break full-court presses single-handedly. He’s an excellent rebounder and defensive player notching several steals a game which he often converts into fast-break points.

Wakefield’s Female Athlete of the Month for January is Rachel DuMez of Front Royal; her sport is varsity swimming. Rachel had a great month in the pool. She was undefeated in the dual swim meet schedule individually. She made the state qualifying cut times in four different events: 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle and the 200 IM. She has qualified to return to the state swim meet where she medaled last season. She likewise is a successful student-athlete in the classroom and in school.
