Unemployment rate drops in December

Fewer people were unemployed in Rappahannock County in December than the month before.

Decreases were also recorded in Fauquier, Culpeper and Madison counties while there were increases in Page and Warren counties. Among adjacent counties, Rappahannock’s rate was second lowest.

The unemployment rate decreased statewide and nationwide.

In Rappahannock, there were 208 people unemployed in December, the most recent month for which figures are available, compared to 217 in November, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.

The unemployment rate in Rappahannock for December stood at 5.2 percent. The total civilian labor force numbered 3,996 individuals, according to the VEC.

The number of people unemployed in December and the percentage they represent in nearly counties follow. November’s figures are in parentheses:

• Fauquier County – 1,909 (1,962) 4.9 percent (5.1)
• Culpeper County – 1,485 (1,544); 7.1 (7.4)
• Madison County – 395 (407), 5.5 (5.5)
• Page County – 1,504 (1,414); 12.9 (12.1)
• Warren County – 1,354 (1,311); 6.5 (6.4)

Statewide, the unemployment rate decreased from 6.6 to 6.4 percent from November to December. Across the nation, the unemployment rate stood at 9.1 percent in December compared to 9.3 percent in November.
