Meetings and Notices for March 3

On Thursday, March 3, the Rappahannock County Water and Sewer Authority will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County courthouse on Gay Street.

On Monday, March 7 the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors will meet at 2 p.m. at the Rappahannock County courthouse on Gay Street. Highlights on the agenda include: Emergency operations plan update; use value taxation amendments resolution; redistricting process with Patrick Mauney from the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission; update on school and county facility energy projects; approval of farmland protection program purchase, plus consideration of the Levi Atkins property; transportation issues in Sperryville; February building permit report; tourism report; setting joint school board-board of supervisors meeting on school budget (tentative date, March 15). The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at Rappahannock County High School auditorium. Highlights on the agenda include: AT&T Rappahannock County High School tower; AT&T Ben Venue extension; AT&T Amissville extension.

There being no new business to come before the commission, and the Census Bureau having not provided any new detailed census information from which to commence a Comprehensive Plan review, and after consultation with the chairman, the March meeting of the Rappahannock County Planning Commission has been canceled.

The Rappahannock County School Board has a public hearing on the budget at 7 p.m. March 8 at the Rappahannock County High School auditorium. A joint meeting with the board of supervisors is set for 7 p.m. March 15 in the auditorium.

Registration is now open for Piedmont Softball Association’s 2011 fast-pitch softball programs. Girls are eligible if they were born from 1992 through 2002 and reside in Rappahannock or surrounding counties. The registration fee is $50 for girls 12 years old or younger and $55 for girls 13 and older. The fee covers both spring and fall 2011 seasons if paid by March 19. Registration will be accepted until April 1 with a late fee. Also, there is a $5 discount for two or more players from the same household. No player will be refused admission if unable to pay. The Rappahannock County Extension office has begun taking camper names to register for the 4-H Day Camp and 4-H Overnight Camp. Call the Extension office at 540-675-3619 to have your child’s name included on one or both of these lists. The 4-H Day Camp will be held the week of June 20, Monday through Friday. For $50, campers, who must be 6 to 13 years of age, will travel by bus to the 4-H Ed Center in Front Royal. There are three morning workshops (there are many to choose from), daily swimming, an afternoon program, and snacks. Each camper will receive a T-shirt. Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday.

The 4-H Culpeper-Shenandoah-Rappahannock Overnight Camp will be held July 31-Aug. 4 at the 4-H Ed Center. Campers must be 9 to 13 years old (or turning 9 before Sept. 30). They will spend five days and four nights swimming, attending workshops such as canoeing, ropes course, cooking, tie dye, and first aid. There will be a dance and other evening program. Those who are 13 to 19 years old (13 before Jan. 1, 2011), may be counselors-in-training (CITs) or teen counselors (more experienced counselors) at one or both of these camps. CITs and teen counselors do not pay a registration fee to participate in the 4-H Day Camp, and pay a reduced fee for the 4-H Overnight Camp. The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Culpeper Chapter #73, invites Rappahannock students to submit entries for the annual essay contest. There are categories for high school, middle and elementary age students. Private and home schooled-students are encouraged to enter as well. Prizes will be awarded for each grade category. There is a $50 prize for first place, $35 for second place and $25 for third. A copy of the essay rules and checklist can be obtained through the Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School, and the Rappahannock County Public Library. Sunday, March 6, from 2-4 p.m., at the RCES auditorium, is the last rehearsal for this year’s 4-H Share the Fun Talent Show. Anyone from 5 to 18 years of age may participate, and there is no cost. Participants may sing, dance, juggle, tell jokes, or perform another onstage act. All acts must be 4-H appropriate (G-rated) and must last less than four minutes. Up to four people may be in one act. To register, call the Extension office at 540-675-3619 so that we know you are coming. The final performance will take place Sunday, March 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the RCES auditorium.

Skyline CAP Head Start is a preschool program for 3 to 5 year old children. Applications for the 2011-2012 school year are now being accepted. Children must have turned at least 3 years of age by Sept. 30, 2011. Children with special needs are encouraged to apply. Skyline CAP Head Start is a free program for income-eligible families. The only cost to the parents is a small amount of time each month. Skyline CAP Head Start works closely with the public school system to help insure adequate preparation for a smooth transition into kindergarten.
