Miss Rappahannock: And the show goes on!

From contributed reports
Despite the awful weather, the Annual Miss Rappahannock Pageant 2011 was held last Saturday and the poise, appearance, and dress of more than 40 women and girls, and a boy, overcame it all before an audience of more than 250 family members and friends. All contestants could have won awards for determination to persevere regardless of the downpour outside of the Rappahannock County Elementary School, where the event was held.

Deanna Wayland, chair of the event, opened by introducing masters of ceremonies John Fox Sullivan and Cheri Woodward.
“The Barber of Sp’ville,” John Eubanks, donated a haircut for a door prize. The crowd applauded Eubanks for his 52 years of trimming hair in Sperryville.

The winning ticket for the haircut was drawn — and to the surprise and amusement of the crowd, Eubanks won his own haircut. (The nearly bald Eubanks insisted that someone who actually needs haircuts be given the prize.)

At the end of the evening, Megan Early, Miss Rappahannock 2010, agreed to continue her reign as Miss Rappahannock 2011 as there were no competitors for the title.

The event is the major fundraiser for the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad. Produced by the squad, several local businesses and friends contribute financial support. Proceeds go toward operation and maintenance, replacing and upgrading medical supplies and equipment, and toward replacing an ambulance.
