Robert Fountain (right), 18, says he swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel running across Sharp Rock Road and slid on loose gravel into a tree — yes, that tree — first thing Monday morning just south of Sperryville. Neither he nor passenger Justin Kim (left), 17, remembers seeing the tree fall. “It was like a dream,” Kim said about the crash about a mile east of F.T. Valley Road. The two, seniors at Woodson High School in Fairfax, were on their way to hike Old Rag (in background) on the first day of their spring break week. Neither was injured; the squirrel apparently got away; a sheriff’s deputy charged Fountain with failure to maintain control; Settle’s came and towed the car; VDOT cut up the tree. Another day in Rappahannock.
