The Rappahannock Lions Club’s Bland Music Contest has been canceled for 2012. Interested student musicians can send their information and applications to the Culpeper Lions Club, which holds its local Bland competition at 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at Culpeper Baptist Church. At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 14) – an hour earlier than usual, a permanent change – the Rappahannock County School Board meets at the Rappahannock County High School library (closed session starts at 6).

The Town Council of the Town of Washington holds a joint public hearing with the Planning Commission at 7 p.m. Monday (Feb. 13) to consider an amendment to the Historic District Ordinance Guideline (Chapter 4, Guideline 14) regarding roofing materials. The regularly scheduled council meeting follows; agenda includes a Virginia Naturalists presentation on a natural habitat area; updates on the town web site and town hall repairs; consideration of an increase in the non-metered water rate; consideration of the potential development of the Washington School Apartments, owned by CCLC, into affordable housing.

On Wednesday, Feb. 15,  the Rappahannock County Planning Commission will meet at 7:30 p. m. at the county courthouse on Gay Street. Agenda includes: Christie Tourist Home. Note: The commission’s next regularly scheduled meeting will be at the Chester Gap fire hall on Wednesday, March 21, the first in a series of community meetings as part of the county’s five-year comprehensive plan review.

The Washington Architectural Review Board’s next regularly scheduled meeting has been changed from Feb. 9 to Feb. 16.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy Culpeper Chapter #73 invites the students of Rappahannock County to participate in its annual essay contest. Public, private and home-schooled students are encouraged to enter. Prizes, awarded in six grade categories spanning first through 12th grade, are $50 (first-place) $35 and $25. If you have an interest in history, essay rules and checklist can be found at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School and the Rappahannock County Public Library.
