This past Saturday, I had the privilege of attending the awards banquet for the volunteer fire and rescue squads of Rappahannock County.
It was a real treat to enjoy the spirit of camaraderie and accomplishments. These men and women do much more for our citizens than most people realize. It’s not just the service rendered but also the money they save the taxpayers by offering their time at all hours on a volunteer basis.
Rappahannock is one of the very few counties in Virginia that is not burdened with the expense of paid emergency responders.
I encourage everyone to donate to your local department – and to volunteer, if possible. Younger volunteers are needed and could benefit from the training if they are also interested in a paid position in other jurisdictions. I hope we can continue to benefit from the selfless efforts of these brave men and women.
