Photos: Thunder watch, and a fun Fourth

Despite the threatening skies, nearly all the thunder at last week’s 4th of July Celebration, the annual fundraiser/community party thrown by the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department, was provided by the fireworks display, not a passing storm – although it was plenty hot. Most who came, and the SVFD informally estimated the day’s crowd at more than 3,000, agreed it was one of the best fireworks displays yet, enhanced as it was by a nearly full moon. Blake Lillard, son of Richie and Missy Lillard of Flint Hill, had the right attitude at last Wednesday’s 4th of July Celebration at Thornton Hill Race Course in Sperryville: Be cool. That was easy – with fireworks, sno-cones, and even some glad-handing by candidates, including Democratic congressional hopeful John Douglass, at right in second photo above, shaking Henry Eastwood’s hand.
