A Manassas bow hunter died in Rappahannock County after his four-wheeler overturned on top of him during a weekend hunting trip sometime Saturday (Oct. 6).
Virginia State Police Sgt. F. L. Tyler said the man, identified as Thomas John Finn, 47, had arrived with two friends at a hunting lodge on Rediviva Lane, which winds into the hills north of U.S. 211 near Gid Brown Hollow, and the three set off on separate ATVs. When Finn didn’t return after sundown, his hunting partners contacted the authorities.
A state police helicopter with night-vision technology searched unsuccessfully for him Saturday night, Tyler said, and a state police tactical team had just begun an organized ground search when one of the other hunters located Finn’s body at about 8 a.m. Sunday.
Tyler said Finn, heading down a narrow powerline right-of-way in a heavily wooded area, apparently had swerved to avoid a fallen tree and went down an embankment on his ATV. His body was found beneath the vehicle.
