The Town of Washington’s Architectural Review Board (ARB) meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 18) in the Town Hall on Gay Street. Agenda includes: George Eatman (construct new garden shed at 598 Gay St.; Judith DeSarno (Sam Cliffton, agent; construct new above-ground gazebo attached to residence with new walkway, deck, and stairs at 24 Harris Hollow Rd.); Ken Thompson (replace existing shingled roof with new shingles at 311 Gay St.); Allan Comp (Jesse Alger, agent; remove vinyl siding to expose original wood siding at 639 Main St.); County of Rappahannock (new sign at 239 Gay St. for Commonwealth’s Attorney and County Attorney offices); Denise Chandler (sign application for 360 Gay St.); and John McCarthy (Sheriff’s Office jail addition final review).

The Rappahannock County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, (Oct. 24) at the courthouse on Gay Street. Agenda includes: Auchter Tourist Home (Playhouse Corporation, Maazel); consideration of combining November-December regular meetings (if needed).

Thanksgiving is early this year but the Rappahannock County Garden Club has handmade-to-order wreaths, garlands and centerpieces for sale with several new and beautiful items this year. Noteworthy is a seasonal wreath in autumn colors. All profits go to sending county children to nature camps or providing scholarships. Items will be available for pickup at the Washington fire hall from 3 to 6 Wednesday, Nov. 28 and again from 9 and noon Thursday, Nov. 29. All orders must be placed before Nov. 21 to insure availability. All previous supporters will be contacted in late October; early ordering recommended. Applications are now available for the Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance Easement Grant Program, which provides one-time grants for assistance with administrative fees associated with a conservation easement. For these grants, the easement must be donated to an Accredited Land Trust, the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) or a conservation-related state agency (such as the Department of Forestry). This is a one-time grant of 50 percent of easement administrative fees for up to $5,000 per recipient. Funds will be dispersed in the last quarter of 2012 for easements recorded in 2012 or scheduled to be recorded before the end of the year. Applicants must have already met the standards of the land trust, VOF or other state agency accepting the easement. If we receive more applications than we are able to fund, the easement committee will determine the grant awards based on expenses incurred and conservation value of the land (size and composition), giving special consideration to farm and forestland. The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Culpeper Chapter 73, invites students of Rappahannock County to participate in their annual essay contest. Categories for high school, middle school and elementary age students; private and homeschooled students are encouraged to enter as well. Prizes for each grade category, including $50 for first place. Essay rules and checklist available at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School and the Rappahannock County Library. Entry deadline is Dec. 1. Piedmont Softball Association is accepting registrations for all area girls interested in its fast-pitch fall programs. Girls born 1992 through 2006 are welcome, as well as any skill level from beginner through very experienced. Games are played at the home field on U.S. 211 in Amissville as well as in surrounding counties. Registration is $40 with a $5 discount for each additional player from the same household; no girl will be refused because of inability to pay.
