Washington’s Cub Scout Pack 123 held their annual Pinewood Derby competition in January at the Washington fire hall, racing cars that take them hours of work to make from a block of wood. With adult supervision, some spend as many as 100 hours designing, shaping and adjusting weight, wheels and axles to maximize speed. Eleven boys from Pack 123 qualified to compete with 140 other scouts from nine packs in the Shenrapawa District Pinewood Derby race in Front Royal on March 2 – where Hayden Milam, a second-grader at Rappahannock Elementary (left), finished second overall and George Light (right), an RCES fourth-grader, came in third, qualifying both to be among the five boys representing Shenrapawa district at the Shenandoah Council Race last Saturday (March 23) in Martinsburg, W.Va. The council competition was fierce, with the fastest cars in Cub Scout packs from nine counties in Virginia and West Virginia on the track. Light finished seventh overall and Milam eighth, both representing Pack 123 with top 10 finishes. Congratulations, boys, on the hard work and success.
