The following are closed today (Thursday, July 4) in observance of Independence Day: Rappahannock County government offices; Union First Market Bank, Washington; BB&T, Flint Hill; Virginia DMV; U.S. Postal Service; Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services transportation services.

The Food Service Department of Rappahannock County Public Schools is accepting bids for local food, dairy products, canned and frozen food products and cleaning supplies. Bid forms can be obtained at the school board office (6 Schoolhouse Rd., Washington) from 8 to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Deadline is July 8. For more information, call 540-227-0023, ext. 3167.

The Rappahannock County School Board holds its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 9) in the high school band room.

The Washington Town Council voted on June 17 to change the regularly scheduled council meeting from July 8 to July 15 – still at 7 p.m. in the town hall.

The Rappahannock County Board of Zoning Appeals postponed its regularly scheduled June 26 meeting to July 24.

Hearthstone School’s Mountain Adventures camp (swimming, hiking, nature studies, games, crafts and outdoor activities) offers three spots: The Day Camp for ages 8-13 is 9 to 3 p.m. July 8-12; and the Backpacking section (ages 13-17) is July 15-19. The Summer Day Camp (crafts, art and nature activities with Kitty Keyser and Janet Kerig) is for ages 3-12 (divided into groups 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) from July 29-Aug. 2 and Aug. 5-9. Rappahannock County School Sports Association hosts the first annual Challenger Sports Soccer Camp July 15-19 (ages 3-5, 9 a.m. to 10:30; ages 6-17, 9 a.m. to noon). Challenger Sports’ curriculum has been created to address the key areas of technical development that have the biggest impact on performance in the game.
