Dr. Richard Deming (in black T-shirt), medical director of Mercy Cancer Center in Des Moines and founder of Above + Beyond Cancer, led a group of runners through Rappahannock County last month on U.S. 211, part of a 4,000-mile coast-to-coast run for cancer. The run, which gathered 160 runners from 50 states, had begun more than a month earlier at Ocean Shores State in Washington and finished Aug. 5 at Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach. Several runners, all of whom are cancer survivors, participated each day in four relays covering a marathon distance, for a total of 100 miles per day. Deming himself carries a relay baton with pieces of prayer flags containing names of those the runners memorialize; it was dipped in the Pacific when the run began and in the Atlantic at its finish.
