Ben McDonald (left) and his parents traveled from New Jersey to Front Royal earlier this month to visit the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s (SCBI) cheetah science facility and to present Dr. Adrienne Crosier (right) with money Ben had raised. Ben, an animal lover, read a story about the plight of cheetahs and sprang into action, raising $400 (which he stored in his “cheetah-bank”), an amount matched by his parents and Suzanne Engel, a friend and SCBI supporter who first told them of Crosier’s work. The young man, who’ll turn 5 in October, is already hard at work on his next project to save great white sharks, because, as Ben explained to his mother, “They need help, too.”
