Dr. Michael Jenks (orange shirt on far right) is chair of the emergency department at Fauquier Hospital and medical director for Rappahannock County rescue providers in Sperryville, Amissville, Washington and Castleton. Invited by Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad to meet with Rappahannock’s EMTs, Jenks presented a research-based decision-making process EMTs can use when deciding whether to transport a patient to a local hospital by ambulance or call for helicopter transport to a trauma center (such appropriate referrals can reduce mortality rates by 25 percent, but “over-referral” can stretches limited resources and add to the cost of care.) Rappahannock’s much-appreciated first responders are always looking for new recruits; contact your local fire/rescue company for details on training and volunteer opportunities.
