The Virginia Cooperative Extension office is offering a workshop on managing parental stress Thursday (Nov. 21). The workshop, “Children and Stress: Training for Childcare Providers,” runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. it the Culpeper Police Department conference room (740 Old Brandy Rd, Culpeper). Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services transportation will not operate next Wednesday-Friday (Nov. 27-29) in observance of Thanksgiving.

The Julia E. Boddie Scholarship Committee will present the Dr. Martin Luther King “Dream Keeper” awards at 4 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Theatre. The Rappahannock County Department of Social Services sponsors Cherub Trees again this year. If you have a child who needs Christmas gifts, contact the Department of Social Services by tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 22) to complete your application. The trees were placed at Trinity Episcopal Church and the Rappahannock Library Monday (Nov. 18); gifts need to be brought to the office (354 Gay St., Washington) by Dec. 9. The Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance is accepting applications for its program to provide one-time grants for assistance with administrative fees associated with a conservation easement. Easements must be recorded in 2013. For these grants, the easement must be donated to an Accredited Land Trust, the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) or a conservation-related state agency (e.g.: the Department of Forestry). Applicants must have already met the standards of the accredited land trust, VOF or state agency accepting the easement. For more information or an application, email info@rccava.org.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy’s annual essay contest is open to all students of Rappahannock County, including home-schoolers. There are a categories for high school, middle and elementary age students, with cash prizes awarded for each. A copy of the essay topics and rules can be obtained at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School and the Rappahannock County Public Library.
