Letter: A heartfelt thank you to every fire company

Just after 3 a.m. last Saturday morning, my wife woke me with the news, “YOUR SHOP’S ON FIRE!” Within 30 minutes of a call to 911, dozens of dedicated volunteers, roused from a sound sleep, were on the scene, doing all they could to help suppress the fire. Their organization and quiet efficiency was obvious, as multiple companies cooperated in battling the blaze. A heartfelt thank you to every fire company in Rappahannock: Washington, Sperryville Fire, Flint Hill, Amissville, Castleton, Chester Gap and Sperryville Rescue.

A special thanks to Lt. Charles Crawford, who headed up the WVFR team, along with Bobby Smoot, Amanda Smoot, Doug Exline, Ann Spieker and Russ Collins on Friday night. Lt. Crawford, Ashley Pullen, Gary Jenkins Jr., Jason Haley and Opie Crawford made repeated trips back all through Saturday and Sunday to douse the continued flareups from all the wood that was in the building.

We are blessed in this county to have such a devoted group of individuals, who spend hours in training, maintaining their equipment and raising funds so that they’re ready to drop everything or jump out of bed at a moment’s notice to help us when we need them.

Be generous to your fire and rescue companies when they ask for your financial support.

Thanks again to all of you.
