Soap Box Derby driver Domenic Del Grosso, a sixth-grader at Rappahannock County Elementary School, stops (for a brief moment) to pose with his car, sponsored locally by Boy Scout Troop 123. Domenic, who races in the Stock Division, earned one third-place and two fourth-place finishes at the rally races held Sept. 13-14 at Paul Bates Raceway in Culpeper.

Fellow driver Zach Chapman (left), driving the “Friends of Rappahannock County” Masters car, earned two first-place trophies at the same races. Chapman’s two top finishes (along with a third, second-place finish) qualified him to participate in next year’s races in Akron, Ohio. (Domenic, proud mother Juliet Del Grosso reports, has already earned 153 of the 180 points needed to return to Akron). Here, Chapman poses with Thom Pellikaan (Rappahannock’s member of the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby Foundation) and Del Grosso.
