Bill Williams of Slate Mills said he took this photo of William Darren Dodson cutting hay last month because it reminded him of the days when Dodson’s grandfather, Charlie Racer, could be seen doing the same job.

  1. Charlie Racer. What a guy ! I remember interviewing him about his life on the Hughes River. He remembered gigging in the river. He remembered when there wasn’t a bridge connecting the two parts of 605, from Rappahannock on one side to Culpeper and then to Madison on the other. He remembered when families gathered at the river to fish and swim and picnic and launch canoes. They still do, when they can. A long history there of traditional communal access to a great river. Perhaps, someday, some of those traditional access points will be open again. We can only hope.
