Steve Foster of Front Royal stood briefly on a platform to conduct the Blessing of the Hounds before the Thornton Hill Fort Valley Hounds opening meet Sunday at Bill Fletcher’s place in Sperryville (“This,” Foster said, gesturing to the hounds, the nearly 100 mounted riders in colors, the silvery fields and surrounding hills in their auburn-and-gold autumn finery. “This is God’s church, too.”) After a few more inspiring words by joint master of foxhounds Jeff Lehew (to those on horseback) and occasional sharp words by huntsman Billy Dodson (to the hounds, who mostly never left his side), the fields — three of them in all, the first field led by LeHew — were off.
