The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit that evaluates 2,500 hospitals every six months, assigns a score of A to F based on performance in 28 categories related to the delivery of safe health care. The Washington, D.C.-based group is run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, according to a recent Sacramento Bee report.

Safety scores are based on public data on medication errors, patient injuries and infections, according to the Bee.
A top grade of “A” helps patients assess the safety of a hospital. The higher the grade, the safer the hospital . . . but the ratings system is detailed. Find in-depth reports about local hospitals at hospitalsafetyscore.org.
