RCHS sophomore John Riedel, a new member of the Quiz Bowl team, hands out programs before this week’s quad meet, which the Panthers won.

This week I had the rewarding and entertaining experience of watching the Rappahannock County Panthers defeat three other regional schools — Strasburg, William Monroe and Warren County — at the Scholastic Bowl held at Rappahannock County High School. I enjoy and respect most sporting events, but nothing has made me more proud to be a citizen — and taxpayer — of Rappahannock County than watching the RCHS team correctly answer a disproportionate share of questions related to science, humanities, mathematics and popular culture.

Thank you, Mr. Dave Naser, for your evident dedication to the program and team. Thank you, members of the team, for demonstrating gracious professionalism while dominating the competition. You reinforce my faith in our public school system and youth in general, and I’ll forgive you for the damage you inflicted on my own ego. Thank you, Headwaters, for encouraging me to attend and learn. I hope that more of us enjoy the experience and support our team when we next host the Scholastic Bowl at RCHS on Dec. 15.
