Rappahannock’s winter sports teams took a winning percentage into the holiday break, looking to resume their seasons with more victories as the new year unfolds.
In basketball, our junior varsity and varsity girls teams took dual wins on the court on Friday, Dec. 19, going into the break, with both teams being victorious over Bull Run District (BRD) rival Madison County. On the same day both Junior Panther teams also claimed victory over Madison on the Mountaineer’s home court.
The J.P. teams claimed a split the following Monday (Dec. 22), traveling to Peter Muhlenberg Middle School, where the boys came home with a win to maintain their undefeated record and the girls had a close loss — only their first of the season — to the feeder school for Central. Both J.P. teams resume their seasons next week with back-to-back games at home, hosting Valley Middle School Conference rival St. Joseph’s on Monday (Jan. 5), then playing host to the Mountaineers on Tuesday (Jan. 6).
Our J.V. and varsity girls teams return to BRD competition tomorrow (Jan. 2), traveling to district rival Clarke County. Varsity hosts another district rival, Manassas Park, next Wednesday (Jan. 7). Now that the Lady Panthers have broken the ice with the Madison win, Coach Burley is gearing them up for their second district win of the season, and fans won’t want to miss an opportunity to see them in action.
Our varsity boys came close to their third win of the season on the Monday before Christmas (Dec. 22), battling the Falcons of Central Woodstock throughout the game and even owning the lead in the fourth quarter, but falling short at game’s end. The boys’ team will host Clarke County this Saturday (Jan. 3), then take to the road next week for games at Manassas Park and Central again. Both varsity teams will host St. John’s on Friday, Jan. 12, with tipoff at 6:15.
Varsity wrestlers hosted a meet the Wednesday before the break (Dec. 17) and saw many of their wrestlers end the night with wins. J.V. grapplers also saw some mat action and posted their share of wins as well. Varsity traveled to Madison that Saturday (Dec. 20) for a team dual tournament and, in addition to faring very well against larger schools, they also claimed a team victory over BRD rival Madison. Varsity travels to Buffalo Gap for a tournament this Saturday (Jan 3), while our Junior Panther squad makes the trip to Warren County next Tuesday (Jan. 6), with both squads looking to add to their season win totals.
The Scholastic Bowl team had a holiday break in their schedule and resume BRD action on Monday, Jan. 12, at George Mason High School. The Mason match will be their final tuneup before traveling to Colonial Beach on Saturday, Jan. 17, to defend their Rappahannock River Conference championship and take that first step back to the state tourney.
