Circles of ice

Paul Shumate, who lives on Fodderstack Road not far from Washington, sent in these photos he took Sunday of the three-acre lake he and his wife Randi have either owned or known intimately for close to 45 years — and on which they’d never before seen anything like the three-dozen ice circles that covered the lake when they awoke Sunday morning (Feb. 15). The circles are rare, otherworldly but not unknown, apparently created by slow-moving eddy currents in lakes and rivers as they begin to freeze.
