Letter: Coterie Shop bids farewell

If you haven’t heard it before, “coterie” means “a group of like-minded people with a common purpose.” For the past three years at the Coterie Shop in Sperryville, owners Jen Perrot and I have had a wonderful experience creating a place where like-minded artist and artisans could bring their products to sell.

Coterie has been honored to represent so much local talent in the shop and we thank everyone who has been a part of it. All of us who have products for sale at Coterie are very grateful for the wholehearted community support. We are also happy we could also host several benefits to help contribute to local nonprofit organizations.

As owners of the shop, we have found that promoting this business has taken up so much of our time and resources that we haven’t had time for our own endeavors. Therefore, we have decided to close the doors of Coterie Shop on May 10. Jen and her growing floral business, Flourish Root, will be moving over to the Copper Fox Antiques building, just around the corner. I will be concentrating on De’Danann Glassworks, working and teaching in my studio in Old Hollow, and exhibiting my work in the Artisan Market at River District Arts in Sperryville.

My experience of working as an artist and owning a business in Rappahannock County was the catalyst for my efforts behind helping to bring the Artisan Trail to Rappahannock County. The like-mindedness of Coterie will continue to be shared through the Artisan Trail. In conjunction with the Artisan Center of Virginia, the Rappahannock Trail management team will be launching our Trail in June. This is a like-minded effort of 100 sites in our county, working together for the interests of a common purpose, economic sustainability.

Please come by the Coterie Shop these next two weekends. We will be featuring lots of sales and special opportunities to purchase locally made goods. We are open 11 to 5 Thursday-Sunday until May 10. Call us at 540-987-8249 or email thecoterieshop@gmail.com if you have any questions.

We look forward to staying in touch and co-creating with you all on the Artisan Trail!
