A Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office deputy who resigned May 10 is under investigation by Virginia State Police, according to law enforcement sources.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Art Goff confirmed this week that he intends to seek an indictment in July on charges of destruction of evidence, a misdemeanor, against former deputy Dan Stevens, 38, of Huntly, who resigned last month after an apparent internal investigation.
Sheriff Connie C. Smith would not comment on the investigation, but Capt. Gary Settle of VSP’s Culpeper division said last week that Goff’s office had requested state investigators look into the matter. The evidence allegedly destroyed, sources said, was a summons.
Stevens had served as a deputy in Rappahannock since 2006.
