Grounded perspective

An eastern box turtle, encountered by a bicyclist last week on Grandview Road near Washington, seems unimpressed by the photographer’s iPhone 6. Eastern box turtles have been known to live up to 100 years in the wild; Grandview Road is only about 40 years old.

  1. Love it! Great shot! Probably a male judging by the color of its eyes, but the only way to be sure is to check the bottom of its shell, which would be concave if it’s a male. In any case, I’ve found few things that launch me into prehistoric history than looking into a box turtle’s eyes. What wonderful, amazing creatures they are.
