Letter: Seeking the Hampton school board seat

No one filed to run for school board for Hampton district this year. As a resident of Hampton district, and someone who cares deeply about the education of our children, I am officially announcing my candidacy for that position as a write-in candidate.

I am a wife, mother, grandmother, nurse and former public high school science teacher. I have served as a representative of Virginia on the Southern Regional Education Board. I recently served as chairman of Virginia’s Public Guardian and Conservator Advisory Board, and currently serve as one of Rappahannock’s members of the Community Services Board and as a volunteer nurse with the Rappahannock-Rapidan Medical Reserve Corps.

Educating our children for today’s world is more challenging than ever. The demands on parents and on teachers are huge, but no more so than on the children. The small size of our school system creates additional issues that our school board must manage. I believe we must have a school system that preserves the fine system we have always depended on while adjusting to the changing needs, making certain we are educating our children for tomorrow — not for yesterday.

Rappahannock County is blessed with a wealth of talented citizens, many of whom would love to volunteer their services to the schools. There are volunteers now in our schools, and Headwaters is a mighty contributor, but one of my goals will be to make it easier for many more to add to these efforts.

My recently departed mother taught me, “If you see a need that you can fill, step up. And always, when you leave a place, leave it better than it was when you found it.” I certainly had not planned to run for school board or anything else, but when this gap opened up, I saw it as an opportunity to fulfill that charge.

My first activity as a candidate, beginning Aug. 1, will be to meet with as many parents, teachers, and other citizens as possible to learn their ideas and concerns. Until then, interested voters may refer to the website I started building this past weekend: demarisforschoolboard.com. During the campaign, I expect to be adding more to that website as I gather ideas from all of you.

I would be honored to have your support and your vote Nov. 3.

Demaris H. Miller, RN, Ph.D.
