Letter: The office of ‘faithfully and impartially’

After some deliberation, I decided to respond to Ms. Sullivan’s letter from last week.

Regarding the administration of land use taxation in Rappahannock County, we have taxpayers who feel that we are too lenient and taxpayers who feel we are too tough.

More than 34 years ago, I was administered an oath that is given every four years. It starts out with “I do solemnly swear” and ends with “. . . and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties incumbent upon me as Commissioner of the Revenue, according to the best of my ability, so help me God.”

That’s what I have done — in all aspects of taxation, not just land use — and will continue to do until my departure.

Beverly Atkins
Commissioner of the Revenue
