The Washington Town Council voted at its Oct. 12 meeting to continue the meeting to 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Oct. 22) for a joint work session with the planning commission to review the Avon Hall Study Group Report.

The Washington Planning Commission meets 7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 26) at town hall. Agenda includes approval of minutes and a continued Comprehensive Plan review.

Free Rug Hooking Workshops at River District Arts (Studio 9, 3 River Lane, Sperryville) is 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 24) with Sally Mello of Oak Shade Farm. The Fauquier Court House Chapter DAR and the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter SAR co-host a genealogy workshop Nov. 7 at the Warrenton Presbyterian Church (91 Main St.). Sessions begin at 9:30  and finish at 3:30. Rappahannock County students are invited to take part in the annual essay contest held by the Culpeper Chapter #73 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Categories for high school, middle and elementary students; private and home-schooled students also encouraged to enter. Prizes for each grade category include a $50 first prize. If you have an interest in history, pick up a copy of the essay topics and rules at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School or the Rappahannock County Public Library. The Blue Ridge Singers welcome adventurous singers 16 and older. The group’s repertoire spans contemporary composers (e.g., Lauridsen, Gjeilo, Runestad), the Renaissance, the 17th through 20th centuries and Broadway musicals. The ability to read music is a plus; a fast ear works, too. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights in Stephens City; concerts are presented in December and April in Frederick, Warren and Prince William counties. Piedmont Softball Association is accepting registrations for all area girls (born 1996-2009) at all skill levels interested in its fast-pitch programs this fall.
