The Rappahannock County School Board holds a work session 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at the school board offices. The next regularly scheduled school board meeting is 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at the high school band room.

The Town of Washington Planning Commission meets 7 p.m. Monday (Nov. 23) at town hall to continue its Comprehensive Plan review.

Thanksgiving closings: All Rappahannock County government offices close at noon Wednesday (Nov. 25) and reopen Monday, Nov. 30. Rappahannock County Public Schools are closed Wednesday-Friday (Nov. 25-27), reopening Monday, Nov. 30. Union Bank and Trust and BB&T are closed Thanksgiving day (Nov. 26) and reopen Friday, Nov. 27. The Rappahannock News is closed on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 26-27). Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services transportation will not operate Wednesday-Friday, Nov. 25-27.

The Rappahannock News also has early deadlines for the Thanksgiving week edition. (Newspapers normally delivered by mail on Thursday will be delivered on Wednesday, Nov. 25). All items for publication should be submitted no later than 5  p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 20).

Rappahannock County Board of Zoning Appeals meets 7:30 p.m. tonight (Nov. 19) at the county courthouse. Agenda includes: Dodd Tourist Home.

The Julia E. Boddie Scholarship Committee invites community nominations for the 2016 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Dream Keeper” awards, to be presented Jan. 17 during the 25th annual MLK Celebration in Rappahannock County at The Theatre, Gay Street, Washington. Nominees must be residents or relatives of residents of Rappahannock County. Awardees will be selected in three categories: individuals/adult, individuals/student and group, business or organization. Rappahannock County Department of Social Services sponsors “Cherub and Angel trees” again this year. For children up to age 18 who need Christmas gifts, please contact the department before Nov. 20 to complete an application. If you are a senior citizen (65 or older) and need some assistance for the holidays, please contact the department. (The same time guidelines apply.) The trees will be placed at Trinity Episcopal Church and Union Bank by Nov. 18. If you “adopt” a cherub or an angel to provide Christmas gifts, the gifts need to be brought to the office by Dec. 4. Kids Bible Club (for first- through fourth-graders) of Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church meets after school, 3:30 to 5, every Wednesday. Rappahannock County students are invited to take part in the annual essay contest held by the Culpeper Chapter #73 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Categories for high school, middle and elementary students; private and home-schooled students also encouraged to enter. Prizes for each grade category include a $50 first prize. The Blue Ridge Singers welcome adventurous singers 16 and older. The group’s repertoire spans contemporary composers (e.g., Lauridsen, Gjeilo, Runestad), the Renaissance, the 17th through 20th centuries and Broadway musicals. The ability to read music is a plus; a fast ear works, too. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights in Stephens City; concerts are presented in December and April in Frederick, Warren and Prince William counties.
