The Scholastic Bowl team competed last weekend in the Region 1A East Championship at Luray High School. Rapp got off to a fast start, defeating Chincoteague and West Point High School, but then dropped their third match to eventual champion Riverheads. In the next match, Rapp again fell short, this time to eventual runner up Galileo Magnet School. Rapp ended the day with two victories, over Surry and Lancaster High Schools, but those wins were not enough to break into the top two standings. Rapp ended their season with a third place regional finish.

However disappointment was not to be found on the faces of our quiz bowlers, as they all knew that they had completed a successful year. As Coach Dave Naser said, “We knew this would be a rebuilding year, losing three seniors from a team that won states last year.” And while not getting back to states this year might have caused a few frowns, bringing home a conference champion trophy and a third place regional finish was not a bad way to finish a “rebuilding” year. The team will continue to practice over the next few weeks, playing in some invitationals and preparing for their April 30 spot on “It’s Academic” at the WRC-TV4 studios in Washington, D.C.

In hoops action, our basketball teams are in the process of wrapping up their regular seasons and, in the case of Junior Panther and Varsity, preparing for their post season tourneys. Our Junior Panther boys and girls hosted their last regular season game on Feb. 2 versus Mt. View. The girls ended with a win and the boys with a close loss. Both teams are preparing to host Valley Middle School Conference Playoff games. The boys hosted a game Tuesday, Feb. 9 (results too late for this article), and the girls host their game tonight, Thursday, Feb. 11, tipoff at 4:30 p.m.

In JV girls’ hoops action, Coach Jeff Atkins team finished the season in strong fashion, earning wins over Warren County and Lancaster. Varsity girls came close but were unable to earn wins over Clarke and Lancaster, although the Lancaster game literally came down to the final seconds with Rapp falling just two points short of the win. Both teams played their final regular season games this past Tuesday versus Clarke, results too late for inclusion, and Varsity will be in a Rapp River Conference playoff game next week, date and opponent TBA as of press time.

JV and varsity boys wrapped up their seasons with close games but no Ws. The JV team did post five wins on the year with results of their last game (vs. Clarke on Feb. 9) unavailable for this article. Varsity boys came so close at Warren County last week, falling short by only a pair of threes, and like JV finished their season against Clarke this past Tuesday. The Varsity squad will be competing in the Rapp River Conference Tourney next week with date and opponent still TBA.
