Loving the film in Scrabble

Stanley Reynolds of Flint Hill (left), Ellen Thorburn of Brussels, Belgium, and James Allsberry of Flint Hill were among a full house at the Rappahannock African-American Heritage Center in Scrabble for the Friday night screening of “Loving,” which tells the story of Loving v. Virginia. Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple from Virginia, spent nine years fighting to live as husband and wife.

They were sentenced to one year in prison for violating the state’s anti-miscegenation statute. Their civil rights case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry and invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage.
