Gov. Kaine 'has no such objection to abortion'
I take serious issue with your recent characterization of Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine as a “serious Catholic” in the Aug. 21 edition of the Rappahannock News.
While Gov. Kaine does indeed have a “serious objection to the death penalty,” he has no such objection to another sort of death penalty known as abortion. During his 2001 campaign for lieutenant governor he stated that he “opposes efforts to restrict abortions.” His support for abortion rights was confirmed again last month when he opined during a PBS interview, “I don’t think Roe v. Wade should be overturned.”
The church’s position on “pro-choice” Catholic politicians is clear and Pope Benedict XVI has amplified it stating “politicians who support legal abortion are subject to excommunication.”
Yes, Gov. Kaine is Catholic – if he embraced church teachings, he might also be considered a serious Catholic.
