Trinity Episcopal Church celebrates 150 years with new look

Trinity Episcopal Church in “Little” Washington belongs to Bromfield Parish which is over 250 years old and has included a variety of churches over the years in what is now Madison and Rappahannock counties.

In the 1850s the rector was working out of what is now
Madison County trying to minister to folks in Rappahannock, with no church here at the time. He commented that he rode his horse so long in the winter that at times his buffalo boots froze to his stirrups.
Finally, in the spring of 1857 the construction of Trinity Church was begun
with the laying of a cornerstone in full ceremony. In November 1857 the new church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. John Johns, bishop of the Diocese of Virginia.

As originally built, there was only the church itself. Much development has occurred since then, including a bell tower and a parish hall on the outside, as well as choir pews, electricity, and heating and air conditioning on the inside.
For Trinity's 150th birthday, church members set out to make sure the building was in shape for the next 150 years.

Work began on April 7 and continued through the summer. For three months the congregation worshiped in the parish hall setting up chairs and the altar every week. Items such as foundations and plaster have been more thoroughly renovated than at any time in the past 150 years. Floors and pews have been refinished or reconditioned.

There was wiring that supplied electricity to the wall sconces which dated back to the 1930s when electricity was introduced to the town, but now all is up to modern code. Fluorescent lights were used wherever possible, including in the ceiling, to diminish energy consumption.

A new and more energy efficient HV/AC plant has been installed. The audio visual facilities are being upgraded, with a special emphasis on supporting the hearing impaired.

The church has made a focused effort to enhance energy efficiency wherever possible from the heating to the lighting. Many other new and reconditioned details have brought the sanctuary to a wonderful degree of freshness within the bounds of its historic nature.
On Sept. 7 especially at the 11 a.m., service, we invite all to come and share with us in celebrating the completion of our renovation work.
