Get fit with new exercise program in Rappahannock
A new exercise program for Rappahannock is Cindy Markart’s Mountainside Pilates at 12625 Lee Highway, which offers instruction by a qualified specialist in the internationally recognized physical fitness program.
Markart, a Pilates specialist, assists people with health needs such as pre/post pregnancy conditions and injury-related movement problems, and with professional-level sports, dance, and overall exercise to condition the entire body.
An Open House held in conjunction with Mountainside Physical Therapy (same building) will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., launching a schedule of Pilates classes for those wanting to get in shape for the holidays.
“I am pleased to offer the Pilates experience and personal fitness services to this area of Virginia at an affordable price,” said Markart.
With a growing awareness of what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle, people increasingly want to focus on “core” muscle groups for functional strength, something stressed in Pilates. Its training program focuses on exercises to strengthen, stretch and stabilize the body to cope with every day activities -- a highly successful approach for increasing fitness.
As opposed to weight exercise training, Pilates instead works all muscles placing emphasis on the smaller, supportive muscles that keep us moving, Markart explains.
She added, “This means no pain, big gain through Pilates training. Anyone at any age can experience how the Pilates method enhances balance and coordination building deeper strength, better postural alignment. Using simple equipment or just a mat, Pilates is the safe, effective way to achieve results.”
In the late 1800s, the founder of the exercise movement, Joseph Pilates, overcame a personal struggle with a childhood disease by developing highly effective floor exercises and body stretches derived from the martial arts and yoga. He developed into an accomplished young gymnast, engaging in high energy sports including skiing and skin diving.
As a WWI hospital orderly, he taught his exercise techniques to bed-ridden patients, greatly adding to their healing and recovery. He also invented equipment to enhance and speed muscle recovery which evolved into the key tools in use today at Pilates studios worldwide. Pilates’ innovative exercise system transformed many lives for the better and continues to do so today, Markart said.
Pilates is recognized for its success in improving overall wellness, addressing modern lifestyle health problems aggravated by sedentary lifestyle, injuries, depression and stress. Its basic movement patterns effectively resolve musculoskeletal imbalances caused by physical injuries or stressed conditions.
Focusing on spinal alignment and activating key stabilizing muscles of the hips and shoulder areas, Pilates has a high success rate in curing low back pain and improving posture. Its breathing patterns work to relax tension and enhance a person’s ability to breathe effectively.
