Girl Scout Troop 628 earns Bronze Award

'We are so proud of our girls and their effort'

Members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 628 worked with Rappahannock County High School teacher and chef Mary Arthur to provide Thanksgiving dinners last week for Rappahannock's homebound senior citizens.

Under the guidance of Troop Leader Angela Wood and Chef Arthur the girls mapped out a plan to help brighten the holiday for people they did not know. After days of planning and prep work they spent long hours in the kitchen preparing stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, fresh green beans, cranberry sauce, pumpkins pies, gravy and of course, three turkeys seasoned with herb butter. In the end we loaded up the Thornhill family's "Big Blue Bus" and delivered the delicious holiday dinners to participating Rappahannock County senior citizens.

In doing this project our girls earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award. This is the highest award available for Girls Scouts of this age group. The goal of Girl Scouts is to teach each girl leadership skills and how to use them to make a "real-life" difference. This project also prepares them for larger community service projects as they continue on their scouting journey. Most importantly, they are having fun learning and practicing new skills and working together.

Our troop would like to thank Chef Arthur for her leadership and guidance in completing this project. She has inspired all of us to work for the benefit of others without looking for reward. We also thank everyone who has bought Girl Scout cookies, nuts and candy from us in the past. Funds raised from those product sales allowed us to fully fund our project.

We are so proud of our girls and their effort. Our troop looks forward to supporting our county's fine seniors through the holiday season and we encourage everyone to take time to check on their senior neighbors. Your hugs and conversation are gifts they would love the most.
