Spark! presents the 'Kings Play'
A long-standing community tradition will come to life on Saturday, Dec. 13 and Sunday, Dec. 14 when Spark! presents the “Kings Play” at Ki Theatre in Washington. The performance on Dec. 13 is at 7 p.m., and on Dec. 14 at 2 p.m.
Although not a religious event, the play is based on the biblical story of the three magi (played by Norman Getsinger, Ray Holland and Lee Klaus) and their trip to Bethlehem to Mary, Joseph (Skylar Owens and Austin Cloud) and the Christ Child.
Along their journey, the magi visit the evil king, Herod, (Mike Mahoney) to tell him of Jesus’ birth. Although assured by his high priests (Stephanie Mastri, Lindy Klaus, and Patty Hardee) that he need have no fear, Herod is terrified by this news, and with the help of the devil (Howard Coon) crafts a plan for his minions (Pat Hamilton and Sharon Kilpatrick) to do the Christ Child in. Thanks to the intervention of an angel (Janet Davis), Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child escape safely to Egypt.
The play is produced by Bette Mahoney and directed by Peter Hornbostel. The music director is Evelyn Oyster. Scenery is by Kevin Adams; costumes and art by Susan Hornbostel.
“This is truly a community production, much like the original productions of the townspeople of Oberuber in Germany 500 years ago,” Hornbostel said. “The actors, artists, directors, and even the audience, all are part of our community, and essential to our show.”
Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Reservations are available by phone at 540-522-1721.
