Corner Store expands – fresh seafood, more selections

The construction partition has been removed and the Sperryville Corner Store is open and showing off its new space and wares.

There are shelves and coolers waiting to be filled, but gleaming refrigeration cases are already filled with soda, beer and water. The seafood case is being calibrated, and as soon as that is done, we will be able to buy fresh fish in Sperryville.

The meat department is greatly expanded and we are awaiting the home made sausage and larger selection of meats. There is now the potential for a real produce department and more dairy selections. We’ll keep you posted about new products and choices at the Corner Store.

Grand opening

American Image Salon owner, Sherri Woodward, invites the community to come Saturday, July 12 from 3-7 p.m. to celebrate both her second business anniversary and the relocation and expansion of her salon. Along with a pinata for the children and food (cookout), a DJ will provide the music for this festive occasion. The new location of American Image Salon is 11951 Lee Highway, just west of the bridge at Main Street in Sperryville.

Photo competition

We have been writing about all the photography workshops in Rappahannock and boasting of our county as a desirable photographers’ destination. To all those photographers, both amateurs and professionals alike, here is a wonderful opportunity for you to submit photos of beautiful Rappahannock County in a statewide competition.

Scenic Virginia is a statewide conservation nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve, protect and enhance the scenic beauty and community character of the Commonwealth, with a particular focus on the preservation of Virginia's most significant viewsheds and vistas. Membership is open to all. Scenic Virginia is calling upon professionals and amateurs alike to submit their digital photographs of the Commonwealth's breathtaking views and vistas in one of the following five categories: Coastal /Chesapeake Bay, Mountains, Open Space/Farmland, Rivers/Waterways and Urban Landscapes.

A panel of expert judges will select a winner in each of the five categories. Winners will receive a $50 honorarium, recognition at the awards ceremony in November, mentioned in Scenic Virginia's "Yes, Virginia!" newsletter, and featured on the organization's Web site. From the five category winners, one photo, chosen the overall winner, will be featured on Scenic Virginia's 2008 holiday card. Complete rules and regulations are online at www.scenicvirginia.org. There is no charge to enter, and entrants can submit up to five photographs each. The deadline for submitting entries is 5 p.m. EST on Sept. 1. (Labor Day). Winners will be notified by Oct. 1. Thanks to Lucile Miller for letting us know about this photo opportunity for Rappahannock County residents.

Tourism in the news

The county Board of Supervisors is to be commended for receipt of the grant to develop and market our own Rappahannock County Web site. In addition, the recent approval for a one day per week tourism specialist position can begin to bring a logical, orderly and systematic approach to developing our underutilized tourism assets in the county to generate revenue.

Thanks once again to Laura Overstreet for bringing travel writers Mary and Bill Burnham to the county in April. Mary has just published an article, “Get Away, Simplify and Relax” in the annual health issue of the Hampton Roads Magazine.

In one section of that article she highlighted the following Rappahannock businesses: Terri Freeborn/ Nature’s Way Day Spa in Sperryville, Teresa Boardwine/Green Comfort Herbal Apothecary, Andy Nichols/Shenandoah Mountain Guides, Shenandoah National Park, Thornton River Grille, Stonewall Abbey and Barbara Adolfi/The House on Water Street Getaway House-B&B. The article was accompanied by wonderful photos of Terri giving a massage to Denise Chandler and Teresa preparing a fest of wild foraged foods in her 30-foot yurt. This kind of advertising costs nothing to the county and brings in visitors to use our services.
