Spark! workshops
The newest addition to creative learning opportunities for children in our community includes upcoming workshops offered by SPARK!
Eight children will participate in a weeklong drama workshop by Lynne Whitehead in which they will write, produce and present a one-act play. Twelve children will learn culinary skills from the incomparable chef and teacher Mary Arthur. Twenty-five children will participate in a photography workshop. Multiple partners will make this photography workshop an extraordinary experience. Nikon has donated 30 cameras for the students. National Geographic will host the students in Washington, D.C., for two days and the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League will make dogs available for an animal and photography workshop. A free community Art Fest in mid-August will proudly display all these creative efforts by our children. Time and locations of the Art Fest will be announced later.
'Member of the Month'
Stephanie Atkins was nominated and selected to be “Member of the Month” of the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad in recognition of her outstanding support of new members who were preparing for state EMT exams. She conducted drills which prepared trainees for the practical part of the exam, which several felt they would not have passed without Stephanie’s assistance. Stephanie put in many hours to support these students and made a significant contribution to the rebuilding of SVRS. Thank you Stephanie.
Kate turns 89!
Kate Adolfi, my mother, grew up in (East)Rome, N.Y., the Italian part of town. Her father started work in Revere Copper and Brass, but soon bought a truck and began his own construction company. Kate married Joe and ran a corner grocery store from 1946 to 1984 where Kate was the business woman, learning as she went along. Kate is devoted to her family and is proud of her travels to Italy, France, Greece, the Caribbean, Mexico, Honduras and all around the United States. She moves a bit more slowly these days, but lives alternately for several months at a time with her children in Virginia, Massachusetts and California where she continues to prepare her Italian specialties. Kate has three children, six grand-children and seven great-grandchildren. Happy birthday Kate!
Happy Birthday to Nan Reddick and Kimberly McKiernan who are celebrating July birthdays. Richard Judd, the man who takes flowers to the post office every week, will be 75 today. Best wishes and good health to him on this milestone day.
