Food for thought
Folks may have come ready for a fight Monday evening as the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors braced for a potentially explosive public hearing on Bill Fletcher's proposed conference center. But it quickly fizzled. For the moment, Bill withdrew his application and will need to go back to the drawing board to work out a few details. He'll be back though. Bill needs to find a plan that will not only keep him and his family financially viable for the future but will perhaps be more palatable to county scenic consumers. It's possible for a partnership to be forged in the future. There's too much at stake not for everyone involved to make it work. It may be optimistic and a bit on the rose-colored glasses viewpoint but the players involved are powerful enough to put something in place that will please most of the people.
Speaking of sustainability, this Saturday marks the beginning of something new – a farmer's market opening in Sperryville. Deborah Stoker has spearheaded the event. Look for her Saturday morning and consider buying local rather than spending gas to drive elsewhere.
Relay for Life is next weekend and all of the various teams are vying for their “top dollar” fund raising efforts. Doug Baumgardner makes a mean cheesecake and one will be up for raffle Saturday morning at the Quickie Mart. If you miss out on the cheesecake, there will be plenty of muffins, brownies, pumpkin rolls and other assorted baked goodies. Stop by for some sweet things and know that the proceeds are going to support the American Cancer Society.
Politics is an arena fraught with danger. In all likelihood, there will be little consensus. Local politics can be even worse. After all, these are your neighbors and friends.
But, good food, hard to disagree there.
No harm intended
It is regretable that a recent Letter to the Editor appeared to indicate that Kaye and Rick Kohler had circulated disparaging comments about another individual. This is not true, the letter they forwarded was the same letter written by neighboring landowners opposing the Miller Farm Special Exception on technical grounds. There was nothing personal involved. The letter was signed by 98 individuals across the county for publication by the Rappahannock News and presentation to the Board of Supervisors.
It has been brought to the attention of The Rappahannock News that some individuals felt that the Kohlers were being singled out. That was certainly not the intent of this paper.
