At the end of nearly seven years as Rappahannock’s school superintendent I continue to be overwhelmed by the number of school employees and school volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty in service to the children of Rappahannock County. However, the schools have few award programs for employees, and none for volunteers. At our year-end celebrations each year a few employees earn “Years of Service” pins. Also each June, former School Board member Dr. John Tole presents the annual Liz Tole Award to a deserving Rappahannock County Elementary School employee.
As a result, I decided to propose to the School Board at the March meeting a new annual award, the “Above and Beyond” award, for each of the following: a support staff employee; a licensed employee, and a volunteer. This is for employees and volunteers who consistently go beyond the expected by using initiative and imagination to make the Rappahannock County Public Schools a better school division for students and/or a better place to work. Recipients will receive a nice plaque and have their names engraved on a plaque at the School Board office.
Those who don’t win an award the first year will be eligible in future years. Any employee, student or parent may nominate employees or volunteers by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by letter to “Above and Beyond” Award, 6 School House Rd., Washington, VA 22747.
The nomination deadline has been announced as the end of April. However, nominations will be considered if received by noon Wednesday, May 5.
An anonymous donor will provide the awards for the first year. The School Board has authorized me to conduct a fund raising project to help sustain the awards into the future. I am hereby asking Rappahannock citizens to send a check for $5, $10, $25 or more if you can afford it. (For information on how to send donations, email email@example.com or call 540-987-8773.)
Thank you for your support! Our employees and volunteers serve our children.
