Monarchs get bats working

The Rappahannock Monarchs have returned to the baseball field after the league didn’t have enough teams for the 2009 season in the Apple Valley Baseball League.

Playing for the Monarchs this year are Andrew Pittman, Chris Turner, Josh Willoughby, Ben Willoughby, Nick Willoughby, Duane Willoughby, Jacob Dodson, Jason Wiese, Brandon Lee, Ian Oakes, William Keller, Chris Keller, Eddie Putnam, Ervin Phillips, and Michael Mosczczynski.

The Monarchs’ season started on June 13 with a close loss to the Culpeper Red Devils, 4-3. Rappahannock only managed five hits. Chris Turner, Jacob Dodson, Ian Oakes had singles and William Keller and Ervin Phillips each had a double.

On June 20 the Monarchs got their bats working and beat the Shenandoah Indians-South 13-2. In the bottom of the first Andrew Pittman and Chris Turner hit back to back singles and both had stolen bases. Then Josh Willoughby smacked a double to score both Pittman and Turner. Jacob Dodson hit a double to score Willoughby. Ian Oakes and Ben Willoughby hit back to back singles to score Dodson. In the fourth inning Eddie Putnam led off with a single and a stolen base, and then Andrew Pittman hit a double to score Putnam. With Pittman on second, Dodson smacked a two-run homer to make the score 8-1.

Oakes and Dodson went four for five on the day with Ian hitting three doubles and a single, Dodson hitting two doubles, a home run and a single and Ben Willoughby hit two doubles and three singles to go five for five.

On June 27 the Monarchs played a doubleheader against Shenandoah Indians-North, winning both games, 15-7 and 16-1. The first game had Josh Willoughby, Jacob Dodson and Jason Wiese all hitting singles in the first inning. After a stolen base and a couple of errors the score was 4-1. After an error put William Keller on first a single by Andrew Pittman and a balk by the pitcher, Chris Turner laid down a perfect bunt to reach first. Jacob Dodson singled to knock in two more runs.

In the second game the Indians pitchers walked nine and hit two batters. Chris Turner had a single, and a double, Josh Willoughby had three singles, two RBI’s and a stolen base and Jason Wiese had two singles and two RBIs.

The Monarchs’ next game will be against the Woodstock Raiders at 2:30 Sunday (July 11) at Rappahannock Elementary School field. Come on out and enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon of baseball. Admission is free.
