Washington: Twin calves join menagerie at Starks’ farm

A new birth is always a cause for celebration and Tommy Starks of Washington was no exception when he welcomed his newest additions — a set of black Angus twin calves.

Starks’ cow, a charolais breed by the name of Hoppie, gave birth to boy and girl calves on Tuesday, July 20.

The calves were named Ann and Dan by Starks’ sister, Thelma Starks.

Starks has a small farm where he raises cattle and chicken and ducks, guineas, and 15 cats as well. You can name an animal and it’s probably on his farm.

He was going to sell the mother cow because her feet were getting so bad, but did not have the heart to do it and decided to keep her instead. After 20 plus years, Hoppie had her first set of twins.

Starks said, “keeping the mother cow is better than eating hamburgers.”

Collecting school supplies

During August the Food Pantry will collect school supplies for children who can’t afford to buy them. Needed are glue sticks, pencils, pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, black and blue pens, black and white composition notebooks, one-subject spiral notebooks, lined loose-leaf paper, binders, crayons, Crayola markers, art supplies, rulers, scissors, book bags or backpacks, lunch boxes, calculators, Scotch tape, highlighters, index cards and index card boxes, dictionaries, reference books, maps and globes, and musical instruments.

The school supplies can be new or gently used. Hand sanitizers and tissue would also be welcome.

Bring the contributions to the Food Pantry at 603 Mt. Salem Ave. in Washington on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 4 and Saturdays from 9 to 2. Call the Pantry with questions at 540-675-1177.
