Runners pound pavement in cancer fight

Participants line up for the 2009 4-Mile Fun Run.

From contributed reports
Calling all runners, walkers and cancer survivors: the Madison Women’s Four Miler Training Program wants you for the first annual community-wide 4 Mile Fun Run on Aug. 28 at Hebron Lutheran Church in Madison.

The Fun Run has four goals: 1) To give runners and walkers in Madison and surrounding counties a local race that the whole family can enjoy; 2) To honor cancer survivors, whose courage and perseverance are an inspiration to the entire community; 3) To prepare the participants in the Madison Women’s Four Miler Training Program for the Charlottesville 4 Mile race the following weekend; and 4) To raise funds for the UVA Cancer Center’s Breast Care Program.

The 4 Mile Fun Run is open to runners and walkers from Madison and surrounding counties. Cancer survivors are invited to participate free of charge and to be honored guests at the After-Run Celebration. There will be refreshments, music, prizes, vendors, and a MAD-Dash for the little kids.

Sponsored by Madison County Parks and Recreation, the 4 Mile Fun Run will take place along Hebron Church Road (Route 638).
The Fun Run is open to runners and walkers of all skill levels, ages 10 and older; the MAD Dash is open to all children ages 9 and under. Registration is free for all cancer survivors, MAD-Dashers, and participants in the 2010 Madison Women’s Four Miler Training Program. Registration for all others is $10.00. For those who have not pre-registered, registration the day of the Fun Run begins at 6 a.m. and ends at 7 a.m. All participants must arrive before the Hebron Church Road (Route 638) closes at 7 a.m., or after it opens again at 9:15. The After-Run Celebration under the church pavilion will begin at 9:15.The Celebration will provide an opportunity to honor all the cancer survivors who are present and to award prizes to the Fun Run winners. The food, music and vendors will help ensure a truly fun event for a great cause.

The last mile of the Fun Run route will be the Motivational Mile — a display of names honoring those affected by cancer. The names will stretch along the fence line, reminding participants with each step they take of the contribution they are making in the fight against cancer. For a $25 donation anyone may submit the name of a cancer victim or survivor to be remembered or honored along the Motivational Mile. The submission form may be found on-line at Motivational Mile submissions are requested no later than 14 August.
