On behalf of the Wakefield Country Day School community, I want to thank all those who contributed to our successful “Art from the Heart” event on Saturday evening. First, I thank extraordinary chair Nancy Moon Smith, who conceived of the Picasso Spanish theme and, with her co-chairs, Brooke Gilliam and Lucille Niessen, transformed the auditorium into a lounge and gallery of blue and white.

Kudos to Nancy’s husband, Dayn Smith, world-renown chef who created and prepared the gourmet tapas that guests enjoyed throughout the evening! Joining chef this year, Sebastian Carosi added to the culinary wizardry as he prepares to open Cafe Indigo in Sperryville.

Next, we send special thanks to our contributing 27 local artists (Marilyn Armor, Gayle Connelly, Evelyn Cowles, Jeanne Drevas, Philip Ernest, Elizabeth Floyd, Benita Rauda Gowen, Chris Johns, Steven Kenny, Thomas Mullany, Margaret Rogers, Peggy Schadler, Barbara Heile, Laura Heyward, Tucker Hill, Joyce Hunt, Chris Johns, Nancy Keyser, Linda Lawler, Charlotte Maunier, Nina Moore, Kerrie Mullany, Rick Myers, Wolfgang Neudorfer, Kathie Russo, Chris Stephens, Karen Stinnett, Merrill Strange, Lynne Summers, Thomas Tepper, Brenda Van Ness, Peggy Weed, Diane Weiner, Geneva Welch and Martin Woodard). We are so glad so much of your art has made it into homes to be treasured!

We cannot applaud our art teacher Suzanne Zylonis enough for her work with our students for the auction, and every other day. She and fellow teacher Deborah DuMez hung all the art for the show, and Tom Mullany worked with our students to create the striking eight-foot reproductions of the Picasso Madonna.

We thank Bill Woodward and Marilyn Maupin Hart for jurying the show and Marilyn again for the gallery tour. We applaud again Trio Caliente, brought to us by Shahin Shahida, who played with them late in the evening and who caused many of us to dance the night away! We thank all our tireless students who helped check in, pass hors d’oeuvres and join us in dancing at the end of the evening.

We especially thank Isabelle Eastham, Bret Heddleston and Cynthia Rodriguez for sharing their love of their school with the attendees. All our students demonstrated throughout the evening why we are so proud of our school.

Last but not least, we thank our patrons, supporters and donors, the more than 150 guests who responded. Together in Rappahannock County we celebrated and purchased works by local artists for the sake of art for children. How better to spend an evening?
